Kiva Doane wins $25,000 in Terrace Rotary's 2022 Wild Duck Race

"Wouldn't it be nice to have something good happen about now?", Kiva Doane asked her partner after a rather frustrating Monday Morning.

Both of them were aware that the Rotary Club of Terrace was holding its Wild Duck Race that morning -- and they had a ticket -- and she joked "well, hey! Maybe our duck will finish first!"

Less than an hour later, she was excitedly on the phone with him, exclaiming "Remember what I said about our duck finishing first....?"

Kiva had just received a call from the Rotary Club's Rich Toomey, who told her that her duck was indeed the first to cross finish line strung across the Skeena River, and that she was the winner of $25,000.

She wasn't the only winner on BC Day; the others (photos below) were:

2nd prize (a half-hour helicopter ride from Canadian Helicopters)  --    Stacey Stewart

3rd prize (a $500 Safeway Gift Card)  --  Goretti Hansen

4th prize (a $500 Canadian Tire Gift Card)  --  Scott Seifert

The Wild Duck Race has been a Terrace Riverboat Days tradition for more than four decades, but this year's edition was the first in three years, with the COVID pandemic forcing the club to hold a ticket draw instead the past two years.

The proceeds from this year's race haven't been tabulated yet, but it's estimated about $70,000 worth of tickets were purchased -- and as always, all the money raised will go to Rotary and community projects in and around the Terrace area as well as internationally.

Over the past year, Terrace Rotary has contributed over $107,000 to community projects as well as $25,000 of in-kind work.
